Chapter 11

They moved quickly. Nadya activated an alarm that summoned all occupants of the tower to the window on the top floor. Two larger men came to the dungeon and carefully moved a still-rambling King Warrick onto a stretcher, then hauled him up to join the rest.

“If you have so many people with magic here,” Brayleigh asked as their small group sped up the stairs, “then why haven’t you escaped?”

“There is a barrier on the window,” Nadya said. “I believe it works similarly to the one that kept actual, full-fledged magic from entering Etilidus. We have a few people here who can manipulate air currents and for all intents and purposes fly, but the barrier keeps them from being able to use them here.”

“Then why was I able to throw people in here?” Brayleigh asked. “And then float in here myself?”

“From what I’ve been able to discern,” Darissa said, “the magic that we’ve developed in Etilidus is different than the magic elsewhere. I’m not quite sure why, but it could explain why as magic was returning, different people who had never shown abilities before started gaining them.”

“We think that it means if anyone had an ability already,” Nadya added, “then also actually gained the benefits of the new magic, they are doubly blessed and have an easier time navigating the barriers.”

“If magic is genetic,” Vivilyn began, partially remembering a past conversation, “and passed down on both sides of the family, then if someone also has one of Etilidus’ special abilities would that make them even more blessed?”

“Perhaps,” Nadya said. “But we’ve not met anyone like that yet.”

They arrived at the top floor to see a crowd had formed near the door to the room with the window.

“Besides,” Darissa added, “if we do, then let’s not talk about it here. I don’t know for sure that there aren’t any spies.”

Vivilyn nodded.

“Excuse me, everyone,” Darissa said.

As one, the entire crowd turned to face them.

“I’m sorry that we had to call you so suddenly,” she said. “I’m sure you’re awfully confused. It seems our emperor is on his way with a major force of destruction at his disposal. We’ve decided that it’s about time we get out of here.”

There were confused looks on most people’s faces.

“How are we going to do that?” asked a young girl with fair hair.

She looked around her like she was watching a bug flutter about. Flashes flickered from her fingers as she fidgeted.

“It’s alright, Sylvia,” Darissa said. “You’re sparking.”

The girl turned a deep red and grasped her hands together. The lights immediately extinguished.

“I have mentioned before that I have some very special friends,” Darissa said. “Well, they arrived today and will help us get out!”

She turned to Brayleigh.

“Is it just you or are there others waiting below?” she asked.

“We’ve got a few others,” Brayleigh said. “A few soldiers, Serinta, Ethan, Duncan, and Maxwell.”

“Perfect,” Darissa replied. “Please go to the front and start lowering people.”

She turned back to the crowd.

“Youngest to the front,” she called out. “Like we’ve practiced. We don’t know how much time we have.
